Dagestan is a mountainous republic of Russia, situated in the North Caucasus of Eastern Europe, and it has become the breeding ground for some of the greatest MMA stars we have ever seen.
From Khabib Nurmagomedov to current champion Islam Makhachev, a legacy has already been built, and young emerging talent is still coming from the region.
Let's take a deeper look at Dagestan and its secrets as to why this small region produces so many elite level fighters.

Sambo wrestling
Sambo is a Russian martial art that is formed by the combination of judo and wrestling.
The long-standing tradition of teaching fighters this style is one of the key components behind the success of Dagestan-bred fighters.
Sambo is taught to children as early as five and six years old, as it teaches them discipline, resilience, and the ability to dominate and control opponents on the ground.
This style has laid the groundwork that has ensued from fighters coming from Dagestan, as they can completely dominate their opponents with their elite-level ground game.
Unforgiving environment & training
Most fighters who make it to the top, i.e., the UFC, predominantly train in world-class gyms, surrounded by luxury.
However, the mountainous terrain of those who live in Dagestan makes it a physical challenge daily, let alone for the fighters who train there.
Fighters who train in Dagestan are forced to train at high altitude's and with the culture of the training being so intense, they are required to have a relentless work ethic.
Dagestani fighters are almost programmed: eat, train, sleep - they have no distractions.
Lots of the fighters that have come from Dagestan are Muslim, meaning they are heavily against drinking, smoking, and partying.
All this comes together in the octagon, and we often see these fighters breaking the souls of other fighters by dragging them to the deepest of waters.
If all of this wasn't already enough, here is some real footage of the great Khabib Nurmagomedov as a young boy wrestling with a bear as part of tradition:
Family & mentorship
In Dagestan, family and support are pivotal to a fighter's success.
Fighters like Khabib and Islam have grown up with each other, being trained by fathers and family members.
Now, younger members of the families are coming through, like Umar Nurmagomedov, who just fought for the UFC bantamweight belt, and Usman Nurmagomedov, who is a lightweight champion in Bellator.
The most famous story is Khabib's relationship with his late father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.
His father was his coach, which was unusual to see in MMA, but it was an unbreakable bond that just worked.
Khabib had a historical career going 28-0 with his father as his coach until he sadly passed away in 2020.
Before Abdulmanap passed away, his wish was for his son to retire undefeated and achieve 30 wins.

Khabib did have one more fight, defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, extending his legendary run to 29-0 without his father by his side.
However, in an emotional post-fight interview, he revealed he had promised his mother that this would be his last fight as she did not want him to fight anymore without his father.
Khabib stated that if he gave his mother his word, he has to follow it.
Since retirement, he has been offered ludicrous money to fight again, but he has stayed true to his word.
This story showcases the loyalty and togetherness that is instilled in fighters hailing from Dagestan.

Khabib has now taken up the role of coaching his family and friends like his father once did.
He has cornered and helped Islam Makhachev to the lightweight belt that was once his, with Islam surpassing Khabib's record of the most lightweight title defences in history with four.
Plenty of other fighters from Dagestan are also having success, like Magomed Anklaev, who has just become the UFC light-heavyweight champion.

Sharabutdin 'The Pirate' Magomedov is one of the hottest prospects in the UFC right now, and he fights with the ability to only see with one eye!
Do we need to go on?
Dagestan has set a blueprint of success for their fighters, and with MMA constantly evolving it will be interesting to see how long the Dagestans will reign over the sport and if the dynamic will one day change.
